The inception of the brand The first mass-market paperback books bearing the penguin logo were published on 30 July 1935. Before Penguin books existed if people wanted to buy a book, they had to go to a bookshop and books were expensive. The less well-off had to make do with borrowing one from the public library. All that changed in the summer of 1935. Allen Lane, the founder of the brand wanted to find something inexpensive to read on the train home at Exeter railway station after having spent the weekend in the company of Agatha Christie.
