On 6 May 1994, a dream dating back to the 18th century came true: a rail tunnel linking France and the United Kingdom. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Eurotunnel, the unbreakable link between the United Kingdom and France.
The Channel Tunnel, which connects the United Kingdom with France, is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. Often referred to as the ‘Chunnel’, it is one of the most significant engineering projects in recent history and has transformed travel between the two countries.
Construction of the tunnel began in 1988, and it took six years to complete, with the official opening taking place on May 6, 1994. The project was a joint venture between the UK and France and involved the collaboration of thousands of workers from both countries. It also required the use of innovative technologies and engineering techniques to overcome the challenges posed by the underwater crossing.
The Channel Tunnel consists of three interconnected tunnels. Two of these are for rail traffic, allowing trains to carry passengers and freight between the UK and France. The third tunnel, known as the service tunnel, is used for maintenance and emergencies. The total length of the tunnel is over 50 kilometers, with approximately 37 kilometers running under the English Channel.
